Zamtel Finishes Installing Of Its Intelligent Network

LUSAKA, May 12 - The Zambia Telecommunications Company (Zamtel) has finalised the installation of its intelligent network (IN).

And the company would soon be introducing a pre-paid landline service to be called Tel Z.

Zamtel managing director Douglas Mutesha disclosed in an interview yesterday that the company was just fine-tuning last minute logistics before officially commissioning the IN.

The IN is expected to enhance the quality of service that Zamtel offers its clients.

"The equipment for IN has already been installed and right now, we are conducting tests on its work before going commercial," Mutesha said.

"Once the tests prove satisfactory, we shall commission the system starting with Lusaka and then roll out to other areas."

Meanwhile, Mutesha has said the introduction of a pre-paid landline service would help reduce the default rate among clients.

Mutesha said with Tel Z's advent, only companies would continue with the post-paid service while domestic clients would be phased to the pre-paid platform.

"This is because the companies do not give us problems in settling their bills. Those who find it difficult will be put on Tel Z so that it becomes easier for them to pay," he said.

Meanwhile, Mutesha disclosed that Cell Z is ready to take more clients on board following the completion of the network capacity expansion drive.

"We shall soon launch the expanded network for Cell Z. This time, we shall have 240,000 subscribers, which will enable us to deliver our services better," he said.

Currently, Cell Z has a capacity of only 33,000 subscribers but overwhelming demand has doubled the number of subscribers on the network.

This in turn led to complaints of congestion on the network, forcing the company to suspend the sale of new Cell Z sim packs until after the network capacity was increased.
