Pilatus Donates K10m For Rally

LUSAKA, June 11 - Pilatus Engineering yesterday donated K10 million to the Zambia Motor Sports Association (ZMSA) towards next month's Zambia International motor rally.

The donation comes just days after the ZMSA announced it had raised K150 of the K250 million needed to successfully stage the July event.

ZMSA finance vice-president Ian Mbewe said the donation had come at the right time, when the ZMSA was working under a tight budget to stage the rally which is being defended by South African Fernando Reudo.

Presenting the K10 million cheque to ZMSA president Dereck Conroy, Pilatus sales manager Humphrey Kapapula said his company decided to donate to ZMSA because of its input and that of the Zambian rally drivers.

Kapapula said Pilatus appreciated the glory national champion Muna Singh and other Zambian drivers brought to Zambia, hence the company's decision to be among the co-sponsors of this event.

"Pilatus Engineering has been in the motor industry for a long time. This is not the first time that we are involved in motor rally. We have sponsored the rally before and we have been following the sport from way back.

"It makes us proud as Pilatus to see that the Zambian rally is getting on the international rally scene because of our drivers. Like any other sponsor, we would like to see that the funds are used for the intended purposes," Kapapula said.

Receiving the cheque, ZMSA president Conroy said his association was very pleased to welcome Pilatus as a co-sponsor of the July 3-4 rally.

He said Pilatus now joins Spectra Oil Corporation, Madison Insurance, Autoworld, Celtel Zambia, Motor Mart Group, Group 3 Security, AA Electronics and Amerex Fire Equipment as co-sponsors of the rally.

"Pilatus will be providing the zero and double zero cars which will be launched on June 25, at Holiday Inn plus a contribution of K10 million.

These vehicles are extremely important to the rally to ensure safety in the competitive," Conroy said.

The ZMSA president said this year's rally will rev off at Holiday Inn at 09:00 hours on July 3, and that the cars would stop overnight at Arcades Shopping Centre before finishing at the starting point the following day at 15:00 hours.
