LUSAKA, May 3 - Scores of Zambian Christians yesterday joined more than 200 million others throughout Africa in more than 50 cities to pray for the continent. The continental gatherings were organised by an inter-denomination, Transformation Africa.
In Zambia, the gathering, which was attended by several church leaders, was also aired live on Radio Christian Voice.
Christians earlier converged at Lusaka's Manda Hill Shopping Centre before marching to the Showgrounds where prayers were held.
Transformation Zambia national coordinator, Reverend Mpundu Mutala, said Christians were praying against challenges the continent of Africa was facing such as deadly HIV/AIDS, political instability and others.
Rev. Mutala said the devastating HIV/AIDS in Africa could only be conquered if people came together and sought God's mercy, love and care.
The clergyman said the church in Zambia had recorded great achievements in helping to reduce the HIV/AIDS infection rate and hoped that the disease effects would drop further.
"The church in Zambia has played an important role in the fight against HIV/AIDS and so far, we have achieved something. This can be seen in the number of people we are burying everyday, it has reduced tremendously," he said.
Rev. Mutala also said that there was need for the church to pray for leaders in Zambia so that they could receive God's blessings as they govern.
Meanwhile, Rev Mutala said church leaders should declared their HIV status to effectively fight the pandemic.
He said knowing their status would give them vigour and encourage in sensitising people about the dangers of the deadly disease.
And Transformation Zambia communication director, Grace Malenga, said levels of HIV/AIDS in Uganda had drastically reduced because Christians in that country came together and prayed.
Dr Malenga urged Christians in Zambia to rise up to the challenge and use the inter-denomination conference to pray against problems the country was facing. |
